The Gift of Art I Admire
I admire the gift of art that hangs over my desk with such fond memories of the day I received it. It was my birthday. I was recently divorced but not yet dating. There were no birthday party plans for me since many of my friends and family all lived in other states. I had simply planned to enjoy a quiet night at home with my son, but my best friends at work did not want me to spend my birthday alone.
My Impromptu Birthday Celebration
So, we decided to celebrate my birthday with my young son at the park in my apartment complex after work. We would keep it simple they said and just order pizza for instance. Zach requested I not order pizza until they had arrived. He said it was so we could see what everyone would like. But I was sure it was an attempt to be certain I did not pay for the pizza myself.
What a Lovely Gift of Art & More
That evening, Zach and Emma arrived with a beautiful bouquet of yellow roses and a gorgeous birthday cake. Jake and Ashley arrived with their pizza stone and ingredients for making authentic Italian pizza in my little apartment kitchen. Jake and Ashley then gave me the gift of art that I enjoyed and loved so much. But now, I cherish it even more.
Memories Both Happy & Sad
What a happy time that was. However, with much sadness, we lost Jake some years ago to a mysterious illness. He was a healthy man, a wonderful father, and an athlete as well. Although he and Ashley had divorced, they had remained solid friends. Jake and his girlfriend, Hannah, were both avid runners. You would never think that this healthy, handsome, strong and wonderful man in his prime would be taken so unexpectedly, but he was. Jake became unexpectedly ill. He was gone in a matter of weeks. It was a difficult and shocking time.
Some Go Before Us & We Miss Them
I never look at the gift of art given to me by Jake and Ashley without thinking of my birthday that year, great people, great friends, and in particular, that Jake has gone before us and we miss him. I was flattered that they gifted me with wonderful food, flowers, cake and art. Their presence alone was gift enough. But now, the gift of art possesses a much stronger sentiment consequently reminding me that life is precious. And to cherish life in all its complexities amid its mysteries, and overall, to continue enjoying life here while we have it.
We All Have Our Own Journeys
My name is LaVae Mathis and I am the creator of Saves & Faves, A Bella Atto blog. This is my own true story and the gift of art is a part of my personal journey in life. It is a big part of what started my path leading here today along with the memories and people surrounding it. I embarked upon a quest to find a creative outlet once our children were grown so, I began a website about gifting ideas. That website evolved into a small business that includes this sweet blog today.
